In April 2017, the Piaggio Group appointed Gianluca Fiume as CEO of Piaggio Vietnam cum Executive Vice President Asia Pacific 2-Wheeler. This is in line with the Group’s strategy to strengthen and consolidate the Group’s Asia operations.

Fiume brought his extensive experience and leadership as Head of Piaggio Europe, Emerging Markets, Importers, along with his forward-thinking management and ambition into Piaggio Asia Pacific - the region identified as the key driver to Piaggio Group’s global growth strategy. He believed that besides Piaggio’s four brands of Vespa, Piaggio, Aprilia and Moto Guzzi, the Company also has a fifth – its People. As a CEO, his role is to manage people and nurture their talents. For him, the most important achievement over two years is bringing a big smile to his employees.

Vietnam is a fantastic and prolific environment for several reasons. Vietnamese are hungry for new ideas and eager to learn. They are determined to create new things and have a positive mind set. In that, Fiume sees himself very Vietnamese. Fiume believes that the company must be considered like a person, because it is made by people. Without the people, the company does not exist. “If someone asks me what my role is as a CEO, I always answer that I manage people and nurture the talents. It is not a job, it is a mission. It takes a lot, but the return is much more. I’m a strong believer that the people have the power”, he shared. “My successes achieved because I have been surrounded by positive people and positive energy”.

He calls himself a “citizen of the world” and his values such as respect for others, being positive and having a curious mind, comes from his parents’ nurturing. Moreover, Fiume loves to swim as swimming means taking care of his body, and a healthy body means a healthy mind.

Vision, Mission and Future Plans
In the two years under his helm, Fiume has successfully led Piaggio Asia Pacific and Piaggio Vietnam to turnaround across all parameters, as reflected in the financial status of the Group. The Asia Pacific region reported an increase of 9.7% volume growth for 2018 and reported the highest performance globally with +20.2% volume and +28.8% turnover for the first half of 2019.

The regional scooter production factory based in Vietnam reported several milestones for the first half of 2019:
Best production month: May 2019
Best production quarter: Q2/2019
Best production semester: H1/2019

Fiume injected the core values: Paying attention to individuals, Importance to quality, Long term vision and Devotion to customers for the Asia Pacific markets including Piaggio Vietnam. He has created a Piaggio culture that empowers people to grow, individuals to express themselves and shine in their own way regardless of personalities or age. “We imagine how people will move in the future, to anticipate their needs and aspirations. We give a voice to different cultures, to drive development, knowledge and greater quality of life. We analyse how cities and their transport networks are developing, to learn to manage urban systems that are growing larger and more complex.” Fiume said.

In 2018, Eurocham, which recognises the success of European companies and their contributions to growth, announced Piaggio Vietnam as the winner of the Business Excellence Award 2018. In July 2019, Piaggio Vietnam was named one of the “Best Companies to Work for in Asia™ 2019” by HR Asia.
