“The humanity light of the brand will lead”
That is the sharing of Mrs Thai Huong – Chairman of TH Group. From her cherish of mother nature and her desire to protect the community’s health, she has transferred this spirit to all TH products.
Creating “clean milk road”
Mrs Thai Huong often inspires people by her talk, her enthusiasm as well as her attitude of leaving nothing bad alone. As always, she mentions a lot her destiny with the milk industry.
In 2008 when Vietnam imported 92% powder milk – most of which are from China, amidst of the melamine scandal in Chinese milk industry that caused kidney diseases in kids, she felt very painful. This leads to her bold and brave decision to produce milk on her own country so that Vietnamese children can drink clean and fresh milk from their homeland.
TH milk farm only started out since 2006, but within 6 years later, TH Corporation owned a herd of 45000 milk cows, establishing the record of Asia’s largest hi-tech milk farm and achieving certain success. Until now, TH accounted for 40% market share of the milk industry, contributing to change the face of it.
The uniqueness of the project lies in the terms “fresh” and “clean” that she is trying to build. “Fresh” is hard to achieve because the hot climate provides an unfavourable condition to milk the cows, plus the industry was not so well established back then, although Vietnam has abundant land. She was captured by the question as to why Thailand, the Netherlands, the U.S and Israel are all doing agriculture but with higher productivity, quality, consumption and better price. The answer, she found, is that they all invest in mass production and R&D for better production and consumption from start to end, optimizing on their competitive advantage.
A good role model is Israel. A small-sized country with over 20.000 km2 in area, slightly bigger than Nghe An province, Israel is a semi-desert state with harsh weather condition. However, Israel is still praised “Silicon Valley” of the agriculture, with their milk and agriculture produce recognized as world-class. They have created miracles of green agriculture on deserts.
A key to their success is technology. Mrs Huong asserted, “Vietnam has better advantages in terms of land and human resource, so if we master the technology, we will lead”. Therefore, her strategy is to utilize Vietnam’s natural resource and human capital, as well as world leading technology to produce milk. This strategy has proven to be a huge success, as seen in her project in Nghe An, with TH milk farm being able to produce raise milk cows in hot and humid weather but still producing high quality milk products.
She believes that the humanity light of the brand will always lead the way. If we all position the brand to be “for community’s health”, we will all succeed in our every endeavour.
From the project’s success in Nghe An, TH continued to survey and research for building a milk farm and a milk-processing factory. Ha Giang is the next location that TH chooses to invest in, after Nghe An. On 27 November this year, Mrs Huong and the Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc have participated in the ground-breaking ceremony of this new project.
After Nghe An and Ha Giang comes several development projects: Thanh Hoa (20000 cows), Phu Yen (20000 cows) and Soc Trang (10000 cows). In the near future, TH is looking to have milk farms in every of Vietnam’s economic region for quickly meeting demands in domestic markets. This move is supposed to reduce imported milk and aims for exporting to foreign markets.
No changing of nature
TH is looking to expand into building herb farms and preserving herbs that are good for health.Mrs Huong shared, “Our milk and food projects will continue to succeed as they carry our values, which are sharing, kindness and community’s health.
At the moment, besides milk projects, TH is also operating clean herb and vegetable farm in Nghe An, clean rice and vegetable in Thai Binh, as well as herb farms in rural areas such as Ha Giang, Son La, and Dien Bien.
Mrs Huong called this the process of creating an organic food ecosystem. Her journey is obvious and well-planned: The “Milk Lady” is now targeting at new products, such as milk and milk produce combined with Vietnamese herbs, rare Vietnamese herbs like Lan Thach Hoc (grown in Ha Giang and Yen Bai), tea and tea products following Vietnamese feudal style or Japanese style, high-nutrient rice (Nang Oi – Muong Long rice, Rong – Do Luong sticky rice, Nghe An rice), peanut, sesame, Hung Yen longan, durian, avocado and orange.
As for sustainable development, Mrs Huong assured that TH never applies genetically modified technology or use chemicals to force land and plants for outputs. What TH does is to optimize on values of local plants, while keeping and respecting nature in its own way. She says no to any change on nature, because she firmly believes protecting the nature is protecting the community’s health.
In the milk industry, Mrs Huong is well known for having “advanced minset” for her utilizing automation technology into milk farming since 2009. Some people asked her if this move goes against her philosophy of preserving the nature.
Nonetheless, she insisted, “In this era, there are many technologies that we can apply, but for food and beverage for human, we have to respect and use well our endowment from mother nature. Technology only serves as a solution for productivity, output and quality control”.
This is a philosophy of “a kind housewife”. She believes that the humanity light of the brand will always lead the way. If we all position the brand to be “for community’s health”, we will all succeed in our every endeavour.
Talking about her motto, she shared, “I was born in a poor countryside. That is why I always wish a better life for my family and the neighbourhood. I dreamt of making money and contribution. Now I have become a successful businesswoman, but that dream remains in me, encouraging me to run a business with profit that brings benefits to people. Until now, I still work hard and strive for higher success”.
