Information about the Entrepreneur
Dr. Yong-Fen Hsieh received her BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Tsing-Hua University Taiwan. Her major interest in academic research was mainly focused on the metal contact formation on semiconductors, Si, Ge, and GaAs.

Dr. Hsieh commenced her career in 1994 as the department head of Materials Analysis, Failure Analysis, and Quality Assurance in the QRA division for the UMC, IC Wafer Foundry. After an inter-group companies transfer, she headed the Quality Management Division of Unipac Optoelectronic Corp., the first TFT-LCD Manufacturer in Taiwan, in 2000-2001.

With a wide knowledge base in various industries, Dr. Hsieh decided to contribute to the Taiwanese community by running a Third Party Lab in a commercial way. Thus, Materials Analysis Technology Inc. (MA-tek) was founded.

Her motto “The Best Efforts bring NO regrets in life” makes her a successful entrepreneur with a very positive attitude. She strives to overcome adversity like when local competitors stole certain IP and trade secrets. Bearing the philosophy of her motto above all, Dr. Hsieh’s most valued “Foundry Lab” is a dream come true, brought to fruition through hard work.

Currently, Dr. Hsieh serves on the Board of Directors of the Taiwan Materials Science Society (TMRS), the Taiwan Electron Microscopy Society, and the Wu Chien Shiung Education Foundation. She was also elected to be the only female Fellow in TMRS.

As for her personal hobbies, Dr. Hsieh is a painting lover. Her and other company staff’s paintings can be seen in the company lobby. In addition, she enjoyed singing songs and took singing classes at home during the pandemic period. She also extended her sponsorship to under-represented artistic endeavors, ranging from film exhibitions to independent band concerts.

Besides that, Dr. Hsieh is the longstanding partner of the Love for Life Culture and Educational Foundation; she has joined donation activities since MA-tek was founded and also teamed up with MA-tek and Tsinghua University to launch the “Blue Sky Homeland Project”. Through this project, university students can earn work-study funds to support themselves and have better physical and mental development, a win-win situation.

As Chairman and CEO, Dr. Hsieh guided MA-tek as a ground-zero business, turning a profit by the second year with growing revenue for the past 20 years with an accumulative CAGR of around 20%. The market value of MA-tek has gone up rapidly to USD 500-600M, which is equivalent to around 20- 30 times that of the company capital (USD 21M), and the total asset (USD 200M) is about 10 times that of the capital (USD 21M). Besides that, the company’s total number of employees is around 1200-1300 people as of this year. Considering the business scale and the size of the operation, MA-tek was known to be the largest RD center in the worldwide market.

Determined to provide the most efficient services in 24 hours, “One Day Turn-Around” is the key strategy to the company’s revenue growth, which always hits a new high every year. Despite of China-U.S. trade war in 2018, the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and the Shanghai lockdown in 2022, the growth momentum is still strong in the MA-tek business sector. In 2022, the consolidated annual revenue was historically high at NTD 3,973 million, with an 18.2% growth rate; and a net profit after tax of NTD 627 million (a significant increase of 7.12% compared to the last year).

Dr. Hsieh’s vision and MA-tek’s mission are mainly focused on the establishment of a comprehensive/commercial lab, so as to enhance the RD support of Taiwan’s high-tech industry. This desire has stayed strong even after 20 years of endeavor in her career. The long-term vision of MA-tek’s expansion into global markets is likely to be realized in the coming 5-10 years with existing 15 locations in Hsinchu, Jubei, and Tainan in Taiwan; Shanghai, Xiamen, and Shenzhen in China; Nagoya and Kumamoto in Japan, and planned expansion to Arizona, U.S.

In 2008, MA-tek was presented with an excellent award in service business by the government. Besides that, it was recognized in several lists and magazines for its corporate excellence and rapid growth from 2006 until 2023.

Vision, Mission, & Future Plans
Dr. Hsieh envisions MA-tek’s global presence to be epitomized by “Where there is a science park, there is MA-tek” and “To be the best R&D partner with valuable clients in the high-tech industry”. To serve customers efficiently, MA-tek has set up a service network in Taiwan, China, Japan, and the U.S. with center facilities and subsidiary service hubs.

In the future, development strategies shall follow the company’s VIP clients to those well-developed countries and pursue digitized IOT connections for mobile phones, notebook PCs, and automotive vehicles, improving driving safety and information security. The versatile applications of electronic products will bring in another big wave of analytical demands in every respect.
