An employee of Southern Airports Services Joint Stock Company (SASCO) for 25 years, Ms Mai Huong defies the statistics. According to Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, only less than10 percent of CEO in the aviation industry is women, a career is dominated mainly by male. Ms Mai Huong acknowledges that she is not surprised about gender disparity among aviation industry leaders, but she also says that “there is already a trend of women becoming top leaders” so she believes she is blazing that new trails.

Ms Mai Huong started her career at SASCO in 1992, the only company she has ever worked for. What keeps her working for SASCO is the variety of interesting opportunities, evidenced by Ms Mai Huong’s diverse roles in legal, human resources, marketing at SASCO for many years. “There are a lot of opportunities within SASCO and Vietnamese non-aviation industry in general, with every move there is a new culture, new thing. I have never for a single day felt like I wasn’t challenged,” she says.

Ms Mai Huong started in legal, human resources, marketing role, which is the fundamental pillar for a non-aviation service company such as SASCO, helping her to develop a sense for understanding how customers feel and solving problems, making customers happy, essential to Ms Mai Huong’s role as CEO. Customer’s satisfaction is the most important reward to any corporate, and being able to transform someone’s frustration to satisfaction, noticing their voice tone shift from irritated to pleasant and grateful, and hearing them say they will return to our company with their business is a very rewarding experience, both personally and professionally.”

Since appointed to serve as the company CEO, Ms Mai Huong helped the company to consolidate its organizational structure, and to maintain the prestige of high-class products of the company. This is a part of modernizing the corporate governance, standardizing the quality of products and services, and improving the efficiency of the company. Effectively, transforming a traditional state company to a more competitive firm which still holding the same core value.

Ms Mai Huong is also described by her colleagues at SASCO as resilient, who “would do anything to help each other.” Together they have faced distressed economic times in the non-aviation industry and have pulled together to keep the business moving forward. The combination of fortitude, teamwork is what draws people to work for SASCO and what ms Mai Huong is trying to keep the core value here. According to 2016 financial statement, SASCO has achieved the most impressive profit growth since it is listed on UPCoM, with the gross profit margin increased from 37.1% to 42.5%, Profit before tax of 282 billion – an increase of 235% compared to 2015. Currently, SASCO is among the 500 largest firms in Vietnam; achieving national brand recognition and being the leading brand in Vietnam for 3 consecutive years; Top 10 sustainable development firms in services sector, Top 10 Most Prestigious Retailers in 2017 and Top profit 500 firms in Vietnam.

As for the future plan, Ms Mai Huong emphasized the relationship between sustainable developmentand and corporation’s goal. This is really about building trust not only in companies, but also in your markets, in the sectors and in the economy as a whole. It’s about adapting strategies and business models to rise above the fray of short-termism. A sustainable development corporation is also a socially responsible corporation. At SASCO, sustainable development is made up of three elements: responsibility for the development of the economy; responsibility for the development of people, society and community; responsibility for nature and the environment. And those contributions must be practical and effective.”Over the past 24 years, SASCO’s strategy has always been focusing on sustainable development.
