As a gradated student from Singapore Management University (SMU), Mr. Tung Chi Fung, carried the school slogan “A different U” alone with him, seeks a way to success in the finance industry. Persistence and innovation made him today become a steersman of Sheng Ye Capital Limited (“Sheng Ye”).

Prior to the establishment of Sheng Ye, Mr. Tung founded two different business in Singapore while he was studying in SMU. One business was called Thatgreenman, which was an environmental friendly company. The core business was to develop some eco-friendly products for office use. For example, the company developed a pen made by used paper, an ink made by coffee grounds and they also converted bagasse into paper. After that, Mr. Tung realized that he might need to build up more skills on knowing about consumers, talking to consumers and listening to consumers. Then he founded Colours Diner, a restaurant that serves food to students in SMU. The experience of running a restaurant became the fundamental of Mr. Tung’s sales skill in Sheng Ye’s business. During the period of time in SMU, the major inspiration for Mr. Tung was not only about the professional study or how great the professors are, but it was also about the opportunity. SMU provided him great opportunities such as exchange programs around the world. Mr. Tung finished his college study for three years and spent his last year to have an exchange study in three world famous universities, the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China and the Harvard University in the United States. The international vision strongly helped Mr. Tung to find that what he would like to work on and what he should work on. Moreover, SMU set an eighty hours community service as a requirement, which deeply influenced Mr. Tung’s decision on dedicating to charity.

Mr. Tung created “Growing up and sharing” as enterprise culture to build up a healthy competitive environment and pay attention to personal development of employees. Such culture profoundly impresses each individual in the company and inspire them to corporate efficiently to achieve success.

While studying in SMU, Mr. Tung was inspired by the slogan of “A Different U”. It guided him to find something that no one has done before. In the beginning of entering the Chinese financial market, Mr. Tung realized that most of the financial institutions such as bank, trust fund and insurance company aimed their business straight to large enterprises. He found that about 85% of the business in China was Small-Medium Enterprises but no one paid attention to them. So Mr. Tung made a risky decision to choose factoring business and treat SMEs as his target audience. Significantly, as mentioned before, Mr. Tung’s experiences in SME made who he is today.

Mr. Tung is always appreciative. In order to thank what SMU taught Mr. Tung in the past, he set up a $1 million P.A.K Entrepreneurship Fund with his best friend Mr. Twoon Wai Mun in SMU to assist, provide support, encourage and stimulate ideas of the SMU students and to support the growth of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in SMU. Meanwhile, Mr. Tung is passionate about charity and community services. Mr. Tung once said: “Community service in most people’s mind was like help the elders, help the illness or maybe help the kids. I’m not going to say it was wrong and it was exactly what I thought in the very beginning of doing the community service. However, I realized that I could actually do much more than I could in community service.” Later on, Mr. Tung went to Henan, Luoyang, a city in China and help children to build up a kindergarten. It was a public welfare project named “Dandelion Plan”. The experience enlightened Mr. Tung that he realized that he could put his effort to be a social entrepreneur, but not only a business man focusing on revenue and earning money. Mr. Tung is also the honorary committee member of Raleigh China, Vice Chairman of Handpicked Love Foundation, member of The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society Kowloon and committee member of Singapore Management University International Advisory Council.

Mr. Tung hopes each individual in the company maximizes the impact in one position, stimulate one’s potency and enriches one’s experiences. Meanwhile, Mr. Tung will lead the company to insist on improvement and innovation.

Mr. Tung said: “Age is just a number. I truly believe that the young entrepreneurs grow up in the great environment will have more chances to provide more job opportunities, more economic growth and more social responsibilities to the entire world.”

It is worthwhile because the business is facing the SMEs which is a precedent in the industry. Otherwise, the success of business brings Mr. Tung capacity to dedicate to charity work.
