Information about the Company and Brand
Bataras Sdn. Bhd. is the leading hypermarket and grocery chain in Sabah and Labuan. Founded in 1998, Bataras started with the idea of providing a wide range of groceries at an affordable rate to its patrons. Throughout the first 10 years, Bataras has opened 13 outlets and expanded to major cities and rural areas in Sabah. The company continues to grow after it acquired 13 outlets from GIANT, GHC Retail (M) Sdn. Bhd in 2018 and 5 outlets from Century Department Store in 2021. The acquisition has had Bataras topping the chart as the fastest-growing retail chain in Sabah. To date, Bataras has 34 hypermarkets and supermarkets in Sabah, and its new concept store – Bataras Marketplace is created to bring more foreign and imported groceries and items into the local market. In 2022, Bataras extended its business line and opened Bataras Fresh Mart which is designed to provide imported and local fresh produce and live stocks at an affordable rate.Innovative Corporate Culture & Growth Initiatives
It started with a simple intention of bringing groceries to people or places where grocery and household items are hard to attain. This is what brought Bataras to being the fastest-growing retail hypermarket and superstore in Sabah and Labuan.Given the geographical challenges in Sabah, where many places are hours of driving distance from the city center, Bataras exists in many remote parts of the city and caters to residents from the rural and plantation areas, places where even commodities are limited and luxury to many. Every Bataras outlet’s grocery selection and placement are carefully curated to meet the customers’ needs from that area. Analysis was done to bring the most required items to the respective stores to meet local demand.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Bataras also faced a shortage of necessary supplies due to the restrictions and cancellation of air freight and sea freight access into Sabah and Labuan, and the lack of manpower due to many staff being infected with Covid-19. The entire team and staff of the company pulled through this difficult period by working tirelessly in order to make up for the shortcoming and kept things in place. No staff retrenchment was done during the pandemic and business was able to run normally, and all these were powered by a strong team and all of the staff of the company.
