The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) is a public shareholding company established in 1957. The Group is primarily engaged in providing retail and wholesale commercial banking services, treasury and investment activities and investment advisory services. Licensed as a conventional retail bank, NBB has overseas branches in Abu Dhabi and Riyadh. The Bank’s shares are listed on the Bahrain Bourse. NBB holds a 78.8% share capital in Bahrain Islamic Bank which operates under an Islamic retail banking license. NBB is the country’s first locally owned bank spearheading financial presence across Bahrain and expanding to key GCC markets by building a regional portfolio to better connect with its customers in line with its brand promise ‘Closer to You’.

NBB recognises the importance of teamwork and a united spirit to achieve business success. The Bank acknowledges that emotional intelligence plays an important role in achieving harmony within its culture and delivering sustainable organisational performance and has committed to nurturing that principle. NBB has taken great strides to create an inclusive culture that embraces age, gender, ethnicity and disability, and recently created the Diversity and Inclusion Committee to ensure that its people are valued and provided equal opportunities to thrive.

The Bank has been committed to aligning its business with the needs of the community and the country’s social, economic and environmental efforts. NBB has consistently invested in initiatives for the betterment of the community through substantial monetary contributions and volunteer work, led by the Bank’s dedicated Donations and Contributions Committee.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, NBB contributed substantially towards the National Campaign to Combat the Coronavirus Fund and this was followed by personal employee contributions for the same cause. In addition, NBB extended its contributions, whether through food and basic sustenance donations to low-income migrants for the Migrant Workers Protection Society’s COVID-19 Relief Fund and the distribution of coupons to over 7,500 needy Bahraini families.

Achievements and Impact

NBB holds a major share of the total domestic and commercial banking market and boasts the largest network of branches, ATMs and Cash Deposit Machines in the Kingdom. Equipped with new technologies, the Bank has taken significant strides to upgrade its conventional offerings, enabling customers access to seamless and efficient products and services. Digitalisation has been at the core of the Bank’s transformation strategy, and NBB was the first Bank in the MENA region to launch open banking solutions.

Investment in the growth and development of its human capital has been a priority for NBB as a means to achieve sustainable growth. The Bank introduced a revamped internal training model designed to provide employees with the necessary skills required to address their developmental needs, engaging with them via online webinars, and offering varied training sessions and knowledge exchange forums, as well as awareness sessions, across a range of different disciplines.

NBB also launched its very own Data Literacy Academy, designed to equip the Bank’s employees with sustainable skills to make more effective, evidence based, data driven decisions and improve organisational performance, in line with the Bank’s goal to build a pipeline of data-literate leadership teams for the future.

Future Direction

NBB will focus on expanding its presence across the GCC and building its regional portfolio to ensure the Group’s sustainable growth. NBB has focused its efforts to develop initiatives and mechanisms that will allow it to respond to the increasingly complex and dynamic economic environment and become an active member of the new financial ecosystem and strengthening its competitive advantage as the banking partner of choice in highgrowth, high-impact sectors.

Sustainability is a core focus for the Bank moving forward that has inspired the development and implementation of an ESG strategy and a three-year sustainability roadmap which is aligned to NBB’s goal of becoming an influential market leader and pioneer within the sustainability field in the financial industry.
