BDO Unibank, Inc. is a full-service universal bank in the Philippines which provides a complete array of industry-leading products and services. BDO’s principal markets include the top-tier corporate market, medium-sized corporations and small- and mediumsized enterprises and the retail/consumer market. The Bank’s customers are based primarily in the Philippines and include large multinational corporations with local operations. As of end-March 2021, BDO is the Philippines’ largest bank in terms of consolidated resources, customer loans, deposits, assets under management and capital, as well as leads across most business segments that include investment banking, private banking, rural banking, credit cards, remittances and insurance brokerage.

Achievements and Impact

BDO is one of the pioneers of sustainable energy finance, having set up a Sustainable Energy Finance (SEF) Program since 2010. Over the last ten years, the Bank has funded groundbreaking renewable energy projects, pioneered innovative funding channels, forged sustainable partnerships with international financial institutions, and integrated environmental, social, climate, and transition risks in its lending practices. As of 2020, the Bank funded over P400 billion of sustainable finance projects, equivalent to 2,184 megawatts of the Philippines’ total installed renewable energy capacity, and generating the following environmental and social benefits: over 4.1 million tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided per year, corresponding to removing more than 800,000 passenger cars off the roads yearly, and growing almost 69 million tree seedlings over a ten-year period.

In 2020, the Bank’s Sustainable Finance Framework was certified and endorsed by Sustainalytics, a leading and independent Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) research and ratings provider based in New York. This further strengthens the Bank’s support for targeted and responsible projects that facilitate climate resilience and promote inclusive economic growth.

Future Direction

BDO’s strategic initiatives over the medium-term serve as groundwork for the Bank’s accelerated expansion and increased client coverage. These initiatives include strengthening the Bank’s nationwide presence especially in provincial areas and expand mirco, small and medium enterprises. BDO will leverage client relations through BDO Private Bank and increase investments and wealth management access through BDO Trust and BDO Prime. It will also institutionalise insurance as a tool for financial planning and emphasise traditional protection. The Bank will continue to build a secure and resilient IT infrastructure and focus on NextGen IT update and end-to-end re-engineering of business processes.
