Information about the Company

In line with its vision and as part of its 5-year Master Plan, homegrown Sarawak company, ASTEEL Group, a subsidiary under YKGI Holdings Berhad (“YKGI”), aims to be the leading building materials solution provider in Borneo and around the region. The 5-year Master Plan drives ASTEEL Group to achieve its longterm sustainable growth, ensuring shareholders’ value creation, safeguarding its corporate reputation, strengthening its investors’ confidence, and most importantly, providing gainful employment to Malaysians from all walks of life.

As they evolve with ever-changing market trends, ASTEEL has strategically placed its focus on providing safe, strong, reliable roofing, and building materials to its stakeholders. ASTEEL’s mission to provide quality and affordable roofing and building materials that everyone prefers is reflected in its tagline, ‘Affordable Shelter for Everyone’, which is at the core of its business.

Its value proposition and functional offerings to stakeholders are also in line with the Government’s efforts to providing Malaysians with access to more affordable shelter. ASTEEL continues to demonstrate six core values for success: being sensitive to the needs of its customers; ensuring the safety of its stakeholders with sustainable safety processes; delivering a high return on investment on the back of a strong team; ensuring speed on delivery through technology and innovation; and committing to sustainable development that meets the needs of the present and future generations.

Corporate Culture & Company Activities

As one of the biggest integrated steel mills in East Malaysia, ASTEEL gives back to the communities they live and serve in. In line with ASTEEL’s CSR objective, ‘We Care We Share’, last year, they had donated a van to a non-governmental organisation, Hope Place (Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching), which the NGO uses for its daily activities towards improving the lives of underprivileged communities.

ASTEEL also takes care of the well-being of its employees and their families. As an example, ASTEEL assisted with the refurbishment of the home of one of its employees. The Group also organises its annual Children Education Assistance (CEA) ceremony at the end of every year towards furthering the education of employees’ children. To date, the CEA has benefitted a total of 162 children and young adults from Primary 1 to Form 5, as well as diploma and degree holders.

To ensure the safety and well-being of its stakeholders, ASTEEL also adheres to international safety standards, such as the ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9001:2015. To ensure regulatory compliance, the Group also works closely with various ministries and government bodies in Malaysia, such as Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri Dan Hal Ehwal Pengguna (KPDNHEP), Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), Jabatan Kastam DiRaja Malaysia (JKDM), and Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), among others.

Achievements and Impact

Currently, ASTEEL has over 300 employees and plans to create 1,000 jobs by expanding its business operations. As part of its expansion plan, ASTEEL has set up various branches across major cities and towns. There are plans to open more branches in the northern region of Sarawak, to offer roll-forming services and supply roofing materials to local customers.

A very important milestone for ASTEEL Group is the Group’s penetration into the overseas market, with the most recent one in Manila, Philippines. Although a significant achievement, the Group is not resting on its laurels; ASTEEL has also set up a branch in New Zealand and is set to launch in Kalimantan, Indonesia following the plan by the Indonesian Government to shift their nation’s capital there.

Future Direction

ASTEEL believes that that the success of a corporation is dependent on crucial factors such as implementing continuous improvement; employee engagement and employee empowerment; researching and adapting to the market needs and trends; and embracing new technology to improve the quality of products, services, and processes.
