Dato’ Syed Mohamad bin Syed Murtaza better known as Dato Aidid was appointed in December 2004 as the Group Executive Chairman of Master-Pack Group Berhad, a public listed company in the Malaysian Stock Exchange, Bursa Malaysia. Under his strategic charge, he transformed the loss-making Master-Pack group of companies to be a niche market player, simultaneously creating a recognize brand name for Master-Pack in the packaging industry besides packaging giants like Muda Holdings Berhad and HPI Resources Berhad.

Born in Penang, Malaysia, he completed his education in Penang Free School and joined Kah Motor where he apprenticed with the legendary late Tan Sri Dato’ Loh Boon Siew who built up Oriental Holdings Berhad., a conglomerate that is popularly associated with the penetration of Honda into the Malaysian market. Under the tutelage of Tan Sri Loh, he quickly grasped the intuitive skills of entrepreneurship, which he leverages on to expand and consolidate the motorcycle and scooter industry before focusing into businesses in other industries.

Dato goes by the maxim of “If you pay for my head, I’ll throw my heart in for free”. Leading by example and going on to the shop floor, he keeps inspiring the people who work with him – the younger generation of entrepreneurs – with creativity, decisiveness, fearlessness and passion in all their life endeavours.

Even with his hectic business travelling schedule, Dato always makes it a point to be home to spend time with his wife and two children including members of his family for birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine ’s Day and special occasions.

About twelve years ago Master-Pack Group of companies was in financial difficulties, when it was adversely affected by embargoes in exporting its frozen seafood products. The group had huge outstanding loans. Dato Aidid took up the challenge and showed his resilience in turning the group around, often taking fearlessly calculated risks and exploring new areas and ideas. Dato Aidid together with his team carried on regardless of temporary bad financial circumstances.

Under his capable entrepreneurship, the public listed company of Master-Pack group of companies strives forward to be recognised as an iconic brand name in the corrugated packaging industry. He is an inspiration to his management team motivating them to achieved new heights in revenue growths as well as good reputation every year. Master-Pack Sdn. Bhd. had been granted trademarks and patents in Malaysia, Singapore, US, Germany, France and Vietnam totally – unprecedented in the Malaysian corrugated packaging industry.

His guiding principles in managing Master-Pack have also garnered many awards and accolades for Master-Pack group of companies such as 2014-2015 Best in Packaging under The Brandlaureate, Super Excellent Brand Award 2013, Malaysia Power Brand 2013 as well as the prestigious 2015 Silver Award for Excellence from the Federation Malaysian Manufacturer. The Minority Shareholder Watchdog Group also duly recognised the exemplary corporate governance practices of Master-Pack, by awarding Best Corporate Governance -Small Capital for three consecutive years 2013- 2015. Simultaneously, Master-Pack subsidiaries were also recognised by two of its multi-national customers for being the “Best Quality” supplier globally as well as locally.

Motorcycle, Scooter Assembly & Distributor Association of Malaysia (MASAAM) founded by Dato was instrumental in many activities, initiatives and frequently provided consultation with related Government Agencies. Under Dato’s astute leadership and guidance, MASAAM grew from being a domestic national association to be the representative of Malaysian motorcycles manufacturer’s voice regionally with its admission into the Federation of Asian Motorcycle Industries (FAMI) and subsequently on to the global platform through the International Motorcycle Manufacturer’s Association (IMMA), all in which Dato held the position of President for a period of time.

Armstrong Auto Parts Sdn. Bhd. (AAP), a subsidiary of Oriental Holdings Berhad expanded its operations from two plants in Kedah, Malaysia to six plants including one in Melaka and two abroad in Hanoi, Vietnam and Jakarta, Indonesia during his tenure as Managing Director from 2000-2013. Total revenue of AAP grew three folds during this period, opening new job opportunities to over a thousand five hundred associates.

Dato contributes back to society by supporting tourism, sports and education in the Penang community. He heads Penang Tourist Centre Berhad and Tourism Entrepreneur Centre Bhd., non-governmental organizations (NGO) which promotes, develop and encourage tourism in Penang whilst MITTAS another NGO, promotes bilateral tourism between neighbouring countries of Thailand and Indonesia.

He is currently the President of the Penang Amateur Athletic Association which jointly organizes sports event in Penang such as the yearly “Penang Starwalk” with twenty thousand participants, Ballroom Dancing which attracted international competitors to compete and last year Nyonya Kebaya Beauty Pageant.

“Age is no barrier if you set your mind to do it.” Setting exemplary standards in all the things he does, this year Dato garnered third place in the 100m sprint -veteran category at age 70, having in the past years won similar 100m sprints.

He holds the post of Penang State President for St. John Ambulance Malaysia since 2014 until now. He leads Usains Holding Sdn. Bhd., the corporate arm of University Sains Malaysia tasked with developing income-generating businesses associated with skills readily available within University Sains Malaysia (USM). Dato also contributes generously sponsoring school events including his alma-mater Penang Free School and other bodies/ organization.

Other listed companies in which he holds directorships are Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBA) and Globetronics Technology Berhad. He is a former Chairman of DRB-Hicom Berhad and Penang Port Commission as well as the former President of Malaysian Athletics Federation. Dato Aidid is a director of Proton Holdings Berhad, Chairman of Penang Port Sdn. Bhd. and one of the founder trustees of Yayasan Bumiputra Pulau Pinang Berhad.

Someone once told Dato that he had the “MIDAS” touch, in reply he laughs saying to be passionate in all the things you do but always make sure you do not cheat, lie and hurt others.

As a corporate leader, Dato takes the initiative to care for those people under us as in so doing only can we help to make a better Malaysia for the next generation. The sustainability of the company embedded in Dato Aidid’s approach to business development is instrumental in providing the well being of the community in which the company operates. By caring and providing employment to those living in the surrounding community, we will help to enrich the livelihood of those under our care and in turn the local community business will reflect growth.
