IT PAYS TO CARE
The word ‘ummi’ means mother in Arabic. Nurturer and caregiver, bearer of compassion and grace - the perfect name for a company whose vision is make a positive difference for the caregivers who use their products and services to help patients get better.

UMMI Surgical Sdn. Bhd. was formed in 2009, upon being appointed by Karl Storz as the exclusive Malaysian distributor of its endoscopes, medical instruments and devices. It started with an initial team of 22 staff from a rented office lot in Ara Damansara.

Karl Storz is a world renowned endoscope manufacturer, and produces the highest quality rigid and flexible endoscopes, on top of medical instruments and devices, across 18 different medical specialities. It is the world’s most recognized brand for minimally invasive surgery products. With the injection of credibility and confidence by Karl Storz and its product range, UMMI Surgical didn’t take long to find footing in the surgical supplies business, specializing in the area of minimally invasive surgery.

In the last 9 years, UMMI Surgical has grown into a 56-staff strong company. It now shares a 22,000 square feet at Temasya Industrial Park with Medi-Life Sdn Bhd that serves as its headquarters, while also establishing offices in Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. This growth was accomplished by working diligently to establish a footprint the market share in the endoscopic surgical imaging segment, eventually commanding more than 60% of the market share as at 2018. This accomplishment was also made possible by being the company to install the first OR1 integrated operating room (digital OR) in Malaysia.

Now, UMMI Surgical is at the forefront of its segment and looking to spread its wings. It is one of the best performing countries for Karl Storz distributions - consistently ranking in the Top 4 across the globe in the past 5 years. It was the Best Performing Distributor for Asia in 2013, while 2 of its sales staff were awarded the best performing salespersons in the region in 2014 and 2015.

“Being able to command substantial market share in a market like Malaysia is no easy feat. The competition is always just one step away. It requires consistency in maintaining a very high standard in our conduct and being able to stay ahead in the race to win customers’ trust and approval.” Saw explains. “We try to give back whenever we can, and it is very rewarding that we are being recognised as the company that always give back to various surgical societies via technical support for education and training.”

UMMI Surgical believes in nurturing people – relationships and living - and operates on the maxim of responsibility. And it is explicitly pledged and expressed in their company values:

“We are firstly responsible to our customers. We take responsibility to ensure the products are supplied in the same condition they left the factory and the end users are able to use them to achieve the desired results they’re intended for, surgically or medically; to benefit the patients. We commit ourselves to provide the support needed for the optimum utilization of the products.

Then we are responsible to our people. They are our greatest assets. Taking pride in what we do, each and every member of our team contributes to deliver values to our customers. UMMI Surgical provides solutions, achieves results and earns reputation via its people. We take great effort to provide comfortable working environment and ensure the well-being of our people. We continuously invest in leadership and management programmes to nurture, develop and empower our people. We believe when people feel they belong and are secured; they consistently produce quality works and act in the best interest of the company.

Lastly, we are responsible to our principal. As a partner, we are committed to market the products in the most responsible manner and we believe we deliver the best value to the customers by working closely with our principal.”

At UMMI Surgical, people is a priority. They believe in grooming talent from within by providing a clear career path for them. It has become their nature. “We very rarely recruit managers, instead we promote from within. As we grow in financial strength, we are able to reward our people satisfactorily according to their contribution, which contribute to good employee retention.” Saw shares.

“We realised products play a role in this too but more importantly, it’s the people that makes the difference. Our people are dedicated; professional and passionate about the job. It makes dealing with us a pleasant experience for the customers and this makes a difference.”

“This is the best way to progress forward, and grow the company further in terms of product portfolio and market presence. We would explore new segments as we grow, staying true to our values to guide us to achieve goals in new territories within our core competencies.” In the last 9 months UMMI Surgical has found new partners and distributes for Bard; Atmos and UpToDate as well.

UMMI Surgical is doing a great job living up to its name, growing its people as it grows its footprint and bottom line responsibly. Nurture, and nature.

NURTURE IS NATURE
Realizing that products alone don’t make the profits, UMMI Surgical places priority on its people, as productivity is directly proportional to performance. The key to this is good people practices.

“At UMMI Surgical we practise open communication and encourage our people to express themselves freely. It is not a typically Asian culture, so we make it very clear that no one will be compromised in their job by speaking up and and putting ideas forward , no matter how radical it is.” Their staffs making a mark in global Karl Storz sales is testament to how effectively this has been put into practice.

UMMI Surgical fosters strong familial ties amongst their employees through personalized rewards and recognition efforts. “We hold annual dinners, which doubles as our family day. Every married employee is allowed to bring along the family. We normally go to top hotels, eg. Ritz Carlton, JW Marriot, Westin, Mandarin Oriental, Grand Hyatt, Le Meridien, Hilton. During the dinner employees will be given awards for their achievements and contirbutions. We try our best to give out as many as possible as a form of recognition and appreciation of their hard work.”

“We also started having annual trips since 2012, which is the incentive for the past year’s achievement. Every employee who are confirmed in their position and worked the full incentive year, is entitled to join the trip. Full expenses are taken up by the company. We do this because we believe all employees; from the sales team, technical team, adminstration and logistic are responsible in delivering values to the customers.” Past destinations were Bali, Phuket, Istanbul, Gold Coast, Hokkaido and Seoul.”

It takes one caregiver to care for another. “We’re all caregivers if we’re in this industry. We realize that. Be it within our own organization or with our associate company Medi-Life for example, our people is able to value the positive synergy that we benefit from working together and for each other. This is invaluable when customers see us working together with them and for them. We must care. It’s our duty to care, even just as a normal human being. It makes a positive difference not just to the caregivers going about their job, but ultimately it reaches to the most important people in this chain – the patients and public themselves.”

It’s just a small mindset change, but a profound and significant one at that. We’re all caregivers, and when we care, the world simply becomes a better place altogether.
