Syngenta Crop Protection and Seeds businesses support farmers with technologies, knowledge, and services to enable them to sustainably provide the world with better food, feed, fibre, and fuel.

Syngenta has been a long-standing partner in Vietnam’s agriculture industry since the 1990s. Over the past 30 years, farmers across Vietnam have benefited from Syngenta’s crop protection solutions, high-quality hybrid seeds, superior vegetable seeds, and professional technical support. It has increased the quantity, quality, value, and competitiveness of Vietnam’s agricultural output, including corn, rice, coffee, potato, pepper, and other local crops.

Syngenta is the first agricultural foreign direct investment (FDI) company investing in research and development (R&D) facilities in Vietnam. About $1.5 million is spent on development activities in Vietnam annually to develop, test, evaluate and trial products which gives Vietnamese farmers early access to fit-for-purpose technologies, helping to achieve a reduction in production losses, providing greater consistency in yield and quality. With an eye on the future of agriculture in Vietnam, the company brings in innovations that can improve growing conditions for farmers and enhance the quality of crops. Syngenta’s crop science technology has helped increase the value of agricultural products and contributed to the key milestones of Vietnamese agriculture.

Company Culture & Company Activities
Along with commercial activities, Syngenta also has a strong commitment to farmers’ livelihood and the future of agriculture through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, in which the company strives to enrich the lives of farmers and their families by contributing to the growth and well-being of future generations and the environment. By protecting the environment and supporting farmers, the company can protect the long-term well-being of Vietnam’s agricultural communities and economy. In addition, through these CSR activities, the company can build team spirit and motivation on community contribution for all employees and increase their knowledge on the company’s “Good Growth Plan” value and its linkage to business activities.

Moreover, the company has implemented programmes to build more than 110 houses for poor farmers across 30 provinces in Vietnam to help meet the needs of the country’s impoverished communities. These programmes are focused on utilising farming as a way to lift communities out of poverty. The company also provides access to education for students in Mekong Delta through offering scholarships, and its “Coats for Poor Children” programme encourages its employees to contribute part of their salaries to give thousands of coats to poor children in remote areas each year.

Furthermore, the company champions the “Clean Field, Green Life” programme which promotes the awareness of environmental protection to over 7,000 farmers. The company has collected approximately 36 tons of empty crop protection packages on the fields in 7 provinces in over 6 years.

The company has also joined hands with the Vietnam Plant Protection Department to solve the problem of empty CP packages and enhance farmers’ awareness of environmental protection.

Achievements & Impact
Over the last three decades, along with improving the efficiency of cultivation practices, Syngenta’s crop science technology has helped increase the value of agricultural products and contributed to the key milestones of Vietnamese agriculture.

Each year, about 16 million hectares of crops are protected with the company’s crop protection products; approximately 180 thousand hectares of corn, rice and vegetables are planted with its seeds; and millions of people are being protected from community diseases through the use of its public health products.

In addition to commercial activities, Syngenta has a strong commitment to farmers’ livelihood and the future of agriculture with its “Good Growth Plan”, in which it has commitments that accelerate innovation for farmers and nature through investments in new technologies; commitment to carbon-neutral agriculture through carbon capture and enhanced biodiversity; and partnerships for impact to create inclusive programmes around sustainability.

The company’s work with Vietnam’s agricultural sector over the past three decades is only the beginning of its story in the country. The company will continue to support farmers and communities across Vietnam to improve their agricultural products and output, mitigate the effects of climate change on their livelihoods, and ensure access to safe and innovative products that secure the country’s prosperous future.

Future Direction
In the future, the company will continue to place product excellence, technology, and farmers at the centre of its production to ensure it delivers the best services that meet farmers’ needs and expectations, improve its productivity, quality, and compeitiveness in an environmentally sustainable manner that provides economic opportunities to farmers in Vietnam. The company will continue to build up the organisation and its people capability to support its growth and sustainability development.
