Datin Helen Lim Hui Shyan is a Malaysian Chinese entrepreneur, corporate leader, and visionary.

Born to second and third-generation Chinese settlers in Malaysia, Datin Helen Lim is the 4th child with four sisters and a brother. Even as a young child, she had already been gifted with achieving the best in all her endeavours; having excelled at school, in academics and in extracurriculars.

Having graduated with a degree in Commerce from the University of New South Wales, Sydney with a double major in Accountancy and Information Systems, Datin Helen Lim progressed to complete her Masters in Business Administration with Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.

Datin Helen Lim embarked on her career in the port industry as an Accountant at Rajang Port Authority (RPA) which is now East Malaysia’s First Port of Call from international originating ports. She was instrumental in developing the in-house computerization

system at that time, displaying her natural trait of innovation and forward-thinking. She said, “time waits for no one and today, there is always something that can be made better than yesterday…….” She has always been hands-on with processes around her and she had recognized that Finance is an aspect that will eventually have to do with everything and everyone and that the way forward was to tap into the age of digitalization.

Datin Helen Lim was the 6th General Manager of Rajang Port Authority and had become the first female to take the helm to steer the magnificent Rajang Port Authority into the horizon and impact the international scene. Although Rajang Port Authority is a Statutory Body in the State of Sarawak, Malaysia, Datin Helen Lim’s management style has been geared toward running it as a Body Corporate with emphasis on bottom lines as well as a Statutory Body fulfilling its statutory obligations on excellence in service delivery.

Datin Helen Lim is married to Datuk Kelvin Ling and they are the proud parents of their only child, Megan.
Company Achievements and Role as Entrepreneur
Datin Helen Lim had turned Rajang Port Authority around, from an average yearly deficit of RM4 million to a streak of increasing surpluses averaging RM6 million a year. What was an accumulated deficit had become an accumulated profit with more to add. Rajang Port Authority, like any other, has faced challenging episodes from time to time. It is her strong leadership with an amazing team in Rajang Port Authority that has enabled it to ride the storms with resilience and courage. Rajang Port Authority has become a gentlemanly…. gentlewomanly port where all levels of staff and employees live and work in an environment and culture that centers on loyalty, honesty and mutual respect for all people and all things. One of Datin Helen Lim’s most notable pieces of advice is “Maintain a good balance and establish a healthy, honorable and respectable relationship with people and things that cross our paths because that’s the only way we can keep them”.

“As custodians of the property of others in the movement and handling of property and cargo, it is imperative, to be honest, and to be trustworthy”, she says. “I am especially proud that Rajang Port Authority has done exactly that as testified by being awarded the Asia Pacific International Keris Award of “Honesty Enterprise”.

Vision, Mission & Future Plans
Datin Helen Lim holds steadfast to the belief that people remain the most important and critical asset. It is her strong policy on Human Resource Management that has been one of the most successful factors in Rajang Port Authority. Applying her policy of “Requirement and Optimization” on the management of assets to that of Human Resources, the principle of “Ownership of processes” has automatically instilled in each employee of Rajang Port Authority a sense of belonging and a natural sense to do more with less.

By the same token, her people-first approach is extended to establishing, maintaining and strengthening a lasting and respectable relationship and rapport with all players in the holistic chain of logistics and with the port’s clientele and customers and affiliates. “We must be an industry-leading port that centers on integration and collaboration”.
