Information about the Company
Starbucks in Malaysia is operated by Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company Sdn Bhd., a licensee of Starbucks Coffee International Inc. and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Berjaya Food Berhad. Since its first store opened in Kuala Lumpur on 17 December 1998, Starbucks has had a complete presence across all 16 states and territories in Malaysia. Currently, there are more than 340 stores throughout Malaysia, including 65 Drive-Thru stores and 14 Reserve™ stores. After more than 23 years of operation in Malaysia, Starbucks has grown not only to become the favorite coffee place for Malaysians but also a productive member of communities across the country.
Corporate Culture & Company Activities
From the very beginning, Starbucks has set itself out to be a different kind of company – to inspire and nurture the human spirit, one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time. Aside from achieving extraordinary coffee experiences, Starbucks has made a business out of human connections, community involvement and the celebration of diversity. It is the inclusion of diverse experiences and perspectives that help create a culture of empowerment at Starbucks.
Starbucks is devoted to supporting, engaging and investing in the development of its partners. The company’s people are one of its most valuable assets, and the company provides learning opportunities to develop skills, further careers and help partners achieve their personal and professional goals. One such program is the Coffee Master certification program that acknowledges its baristas’ proficiency and skill in everything coffee, including the different roast profiles, blends, how coffee is processed, and much more. These Coffee Masters are given special designation through their distinguishable black apron and the opportunity to further share their knowledge of coffee with their customers.
Starbucks also offers unique retail experiences for its customers, such as the Starbucks Reserve™ store, which first opened in Malaysia in 2015. The Starbucks Reserve™ concept is aimed at providing customers with an immersive experience where they can explore the fine craft of coffee and discover some of the world’s rarest and most exotic small lot-coffees. These stores are fully operated by certified Coffee Masters, who would engage with customers with their knowledge of coffee and take them through the journey of understanding the nuances of the seasonally selected Reserve™ coffee, its rich history, and the different brewing methods that can help bring the best of their flavors.

Achievements & Impact
By upholding a culture where inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility are valued and respected, Starbucks Malaysia opened the World’s first Starbucks Signing Store at Bangsar Village II, a store that is aimed at providing development and employment opportunities for the Deaf. The Starbucks Signing Store hopes to cultivate a culture of empowerment for the Deaf community, providing not only job opportunities but to ensuring the development of their soft skills thus giving them a sense of pride and accomplishment to move forward in leading a functional and fulfilling life.
The store has since inspired the opening of similar stores for the Deaf Community in the United States, China and most recently in Japan. Building on the success of the first store, in 2019, Starbucks Malaysia opened its second Starbucks Signing Store in Burmah Road, Penang – the fourth of its kind in the world.
Aside from being People Positive, Starbucks is also committed to being Planet Positive. Expanding on the company’s history in sustainability and progress in reducing the impact of its business on the environment, as of October 2020, all Starbucks stores in Malaysia have adopted the use of lightweight strawless lids for iced beverages, and have replaced its single-use plastic straws with alternative material straws that are easier to recycle and compost. Apart from shifting away from single-use materials, Starbucks is also finding better ways to manage its waste through its upcycling programs.
Future Direction
At Starbucks, the team is not just passionate purveyors of coffee, but everything else that goes with a full and rewarding coffeehouse experience. Starbucks differentiates itself from the rest by providing the finest coffee and a unique retail experience to its customers, that of a Third Place, for customers between home and place of work. Ultimately, the company makes sure everything it does is through the lens of humanity – from its commitment to the highest quality coffee in the world to the way the company engages with its customers and communities to do business responsibly.
