Mr. Ronald Goh was seven years old when his father started Electronics & Engineering Pte Ltd (E&E) in 1951. He attended his secondary school education in Queenstown Secondary Technical School where he learnt his metalworking and technical skills. Being the eldest son in a conservative family, he pretty much had no say in his vocation. His younger brother and sisters were all allowed to go overseas for their studies but he had to stay put in Singapore to help his father in the business. His father told him “E&E is your university. This is where you can learn and excel in life just the same, as long as you work hard.” He went on to study at the Singapore Polytechnic for another three years before he joined E&E full-time and worked alongside his father.

His late father, Goh Kiok Chuan started E&E in the radio and cinema business. In the later years, he concentrated and specialized in the cinema industry when the demands for cinema equipment continued to grow in the 60s and 70s especially in Malaysia and Indonesia. They imported used 35mm projectors from the USA, refurbishing them with new bearings and critical parts and finished with a new coat of paint so that they could run just like new machines. They moved on to import new projectors and with the advancement of cinema sound systems, installed and upgraded existing cinema halls with the new Dolby multi channel and surround sound systems. Ronald found the cinema business boring, as it was a cooker cutter business since all cinema installations were about the same.

Ronald moved into the sound reinforcement business as E&E was representing and installing sound system equipment and speakers especially for Concert halls and Hotel ballrooms. He installed the sound system for our National Theatre in 1963 and Shangri-La Hotel ballroom in 1971 when they first opened its first hotel in Singapore. Since then, E&E has moved on to install more than 300 cinema halls to date. His big break came in 1971 when they were awarded the contract to install the sound reinforcement systems for the former National Stadium. It was his first opportunity to work with an International Consultant and here, he learnt how big projects were managed and put together. They also worked on the Sports Hub when it was built to replace the National Stadium in the same location in 2015. They were also involved in many Performing Arts Theatres like the Kallang Theatre (1996), The Esplanade Theatres on the Bay (2002); Marina Bay Sands Theatres (2010); National University Cultural Centre (2011); The Star Performing Arts Centre (2012); The Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (2016) and Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall in 2013 and numerous Hotel Ballrooms including the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Convention Centre, Casinos and Retail areas with more than 7,000 speakers of various sizes and configuration.

By the 1980s, E&E had already established itself as a leading turnkey audio-visual solutions provider and system integrator in the region. Their success is attributed to their expertise and quality of work and they live by their Mission Statement which is “To offer our best services and expertise in our line of work and getting it right the first time to the complete satisfaction of our customers…”

Ronald Goh’s words of encouragement are simple – he believes that one must be passionate in what they do and practice Forward Thinking at all times. Evidently, both his professional and personal lives are a testimonial of these beliefs.

Today, E&E has increased its turnover more than tenfold. For leading and grooming E&E into an industry leader, Ronald Goh has received many accolades both in the local and international domain. He received the prestigious Fellowship Award in Berlin from the Audio Engineering Society based in New York in 2004 for his work in professional sound system engineering. For his accomplishments, he was also awarded the Asia Pacific Outstanding Entrepreneurship Award in 2012 and Pioneer Enterprise Award from United Overseas Bank in 2015. In the same year, E&E was named among 50 local companies that contributed to Singapore’s 50 years of nation building and Ronald Goh was selected by Business Times as one of the 50 CEOs that contributed to the Singapore Economic Miracles.

Despite entering his 70s, Ronald Goh still remains very active in the business, sitting in at various discussions to add value to the younger team that currently run the day-to-day operations at E&E. He has also been grooming the next generation of managers and engineers to run each division with no less commitment and vigor. On the challenge of succession, he has said to his younger team led by his son Gary Goh and Joe Fong, “You are all about 40 plus now, so when you hit 65, 25 years down the road, you will start to look for the fourth generation to continue the E&E legacy.

Ronald Goh regularly encourages his staff to upgrade themselves and their skills by taking courses that may be related to what they are interested in or are passionate about, in order for them to reach their full potential in their professional and personal lives.

Ronald Goh is also a firm believer in seeking joy through giving rather than receiving and was a founding member of the Kiwanis Club of Singapore in 1971 where he still continues his social service work for the less fortunate by contributing to the community at large. He also often goes the extra mile by donating quality sound systems for various venues such as kindergartens and churches in his support for the community.

Today, the company has more than 150 employees operating in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and Vietnam. This includes more than 85 engineers involved in their system integration work, installation, testing and commissioning with each employee playing a major role in the longevity and success of the company.
