At the young age of 24, Ms. Elaine Shiu, has already achieved a lot within the jewellery field and industry, and she continues to expand her impact and achievements in Hong Kong and the wider region.

Elaine’s venture into the international jewellery industry began at a young age when she decided to become an interpreter at an international Jewellery shows in Hong Kong. Hong Kong jewellery shows are a great place to learn, expand networks, and meet interesting and bright people from around the world. “It was here, my passion for jewellery and accessories really began.” She worked as an interpreter for one year before she gained confident and ready to start her own jewellery business geared towards the Chinese market. She thus started her own company and began the entrepreneurial life.

Elaine is born and raised in Hong Kong. “There was nothing too special about me in my early youth; no special characteristics or habits that would suggest entrepreneurial success. However, I owe a big thanks to my mentor and former teacher Alex Tsang, who saw the potential within me, boosted my confidence and changed my life for the better. Since then, I have developed and maintained the right mindset and work-ethic to follow my dreams and achieve them. Also, I owe a big thanks to close friends and family who have always supported me in my entrepreneurial pursuit and endeavors. Without them, the journey would have been much more difficult. “

Elaine Shiu’s key expertise lies within management and both fashion and luxury jewellery, having cofounded and managed two unique jewellery-related companies for a total of 7 years. First, as CEO of Shanhu Limited from 2010 to 2015, a luxury jewellery company selling precious coral. Then, secondly, since 2015, as the Chief Brand Officer of Ejj Jewellery, where she, among others, oversees and sets the agenda for marketing, advertising, design, public relations and customer service.

During Elaine’s tenure, Ejj Jewellery has expanded to over a dozen shops in China, Hong Kong and Thailand. Importantly, Ejj Jewellery also received the award “The Most Innovative Jeweller” of 2017 in Hong Kong.

Neither of these achievements could have been achieved without the direct guidance and involvement of herself. Her passion, positive energy, extensive professional network, leadership capabilities and unique knowledge is what really benefits Elaine’s employees and her company.

Ejj Jewellery is rapidly expanding, particularly in China, with numerous shops in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Chengdu and Chongqing. In 2017 the company also began close collaborations with the luxury hotel chain Banyan Tree. Currently, the company is in business negotiations over the possibility of opening-up to franchising, thus potentially increasing point-of-sales with several hundreds.

Her great visionary and leadership-related skills also ensures that the management teams and employees are motivated to give 110%; where each individual is encouraged to provide feedback, come up with ideas and generally enjoy flexible autonomy over his or her own workday and tasks.

A testament to Elaine’s work ethic and effort are some of her awards, such as:

  • Most Valuable Company 2016
  • Most Outstanding Young Entrepreneur 2017 by Mediazone
  • Most Valuable Company 2017
  • Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2017 by Enterprise Asia
As a young entrepreneur, Elaine is a brave and courageous individual who is not intimated about losing or failing. As she puts it: “If you have a dream, follow it, do it, achieve it. You don’t want regret in the future for not having tried.” This essentially represents Elaine’s mindset. While in school, many told her to solely focus on her studies instead of simultaneously taking the risk to establish a company. Well, she did not listen, instead followed her inner voice which has led her to where she is today.

Elaine early foresaw the global economic downturn, and thus saw a need to change from the luxury market to more affordable products – with still unique and high-quality traits. Now, being unique in such a saturated and large market as jewellery is not an easy feat, but through extensive work on innovation, and particularly diamond-cut technology and production of Sterling 925 silver, has made it possible.

For a lot of businesses, their ultimate drive is maximizing profit. However, this does not apply to Ejj Jewellery where the main concern is quality. “I’m always willing to simply make less profit to improve quality; whether it be improving our products, our personnel or resources.”. She generally believes that an honest and responsible firm can gain large customer confidence and receive the benefit of “word of mouth” and organic growth.

“When there is spare time, I love travelling.” She sometimes refers to life as a book, and that those who do not travel only read one page. Travelling has by Elaine often also been combined with volunteer work and other charity-related activities. “I remember last year, I brought some toys and other things to a poor village in Cambodia, and the kids and parents came up to me with happy tears.” Such occurrences remind her that we should not take so many things for granted, as we so easily do in a somewhat materialistic society as Hong Kong.

Elaine also believes that continuous learning is a vital requirement for success in any field. Therefore, she always sets aside a specific amount of time every day for developing and improving new skills, such as various languages, professions and tools.

In the office, Elaine likes to empower each and every individual. Often, she’ll ask for opinion, input and feedback, and she regards her employees as an extended family, which is why belonging and good communication is some of the most important characteristics in her company.

Winners never quit, and quitters never win. “If you have a dream, follow it, do it, achieve it. You don’t want to be full of regret in the future for not having tried”

Elaine is passionate about charity and social work, and aims to connect her jewellery company more profoundly with various social endeavors. She aims to invest 10% of profits into charities, she seeks to increase employment among the poor, and generally also advocate women rights. She would also like to organize a volunteer group to help the society of Hong Kong. “I want to use my power and influence to make a positive impact to other’s lives.”

“The most rewarding aspect of my job is to be able to positively make an impact on other’s lives; whether it be providing training and development opportunities for my staff, or making customers happy by offering them something they value, or whether it be helping those in need. Importantly, all this has been possible due to the fact that I pursued my dreams and worked immensely hard.”
