Dato’ Sri Che Khalib, 49, took the helm of MMC Corporation Berhad as its Group Managing Director in July 2013. Dato’ Sri Che Khalib brings to MMC his vast management experience in Corporate Malaysia having served at senior leadership positions in various industries.
Che Khalib received his early education at Penang Free School before furthering his tertiary studies in England. A qualified accountant, Che Khalib is a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (CA, M) and also a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA, UK) United Kingdom.
He began his career with Messrs Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young) and later joined a local merchant bank. The corporate restructuring skills he acquired in the merchant bank had been later translated into a few successful corporate exercises he was spearheading and involved in during his time with Renong Group in deals such as the Light Rail project, takeover of the Penang Bridge and management of the national railway company namely Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad.
Subsequent to Renong, he led the team that took over the water company from the State Government of Johore. Che Khalib successfully transformed and turned around SAJ Holdings Sdn Bhd from a massive loss making entity into a profitable company. SAJ/Ranhill Utilities Berhad was successfully listed in 2001 with market capitalisation of approximately RM800 million. He was then offered to oversee the transformation exercise of KUB Malaysia Berhad as its CEO.
Che Khalib joined the Khazanah Nasional Berhad as a Board member and Executive Committee member from year 2000 until 2004. At Khazanah, Che Khalib was involved in several corporate exercises including the taking over of the UEM Group, Celcom, Astro, Time.Com and few others. He also sits as Board Member in few of Khazanah subsidiary companies.
When the Government of Malaysia embarked on the Government Linked Companies (GLC) Transformation Programme, backed by his sterling track record and wide experience, Che Khalib was chosen to lead Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the national power company. During his tenure at TNB, Che Khalib drove many improvement initiatives that resulted in TNB becoming one of the success stories in the GLC Transformation Programme. Che Khalib shaped and set the corporate strategies for TNB when he came up with a 20-year strategic plan in September 2005. The financial management of TNB was outstanding that resulted in TNB’s total debts reduced from RM32 billion to RM18 billion, a reduction of RM14 billion.
Operationally TNB attained international standard when all the technical key performance indicators matched international benchmark. He also managed to grow one of TNB’s subsidiary companies exponentially with annual turnover grew from RM30 million to RM500 million within 5 years and is targeting to achieve RM1.0 billion by 2015. All loss-making subsidiaries were turned into profitable entities and new businesses were also established. Che Khalib also developed a comprehensive staff development and succession programme for TNB. Additionally he championed the Corporate Social Responsibility of TNB in the areas of education and environment. Che Khalib placed integrity and high standard of corporate governance as the key success factor in turning around TNB. Under the leadership of Che Khalib, TNB was awarded the highly prestigious Prime Minister’s Industry Excellence Award 2007. TNB Group was again in the limelight when its subsidiary, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), received the same award for 2009 for industry excellence in education.

In his current role as the Group Managing Director of MMC, Che Khalib emphasises on the importance of seizing opportunities where leaders of the respective operating companies within the Group are expected to exhibit entrepreneurial drive in growing their businesses. MMC is a leading utilities and infrastructure group with diversified businesses under three divisions, namely energy & utilities, ports & logistics and engineering & construction. Given the strong fundamentals of the wide-ranging infrastructure and utilities business of the Group, it is Che Khalib’s personal mission to ensure that the synergistic strengths are effectively harnessed to create value for the companies within the Group. Collaborating and pooling of resources is a way forward as opportunities are enormous in the many industries which MMC as a group can pursue together. He also believes in the virtues of Discipline, Integrity and Dedication which have been instrumental in guiding him to his many achievements over the years.
On a personal note, in his lifetime of business achievements, Che Khalib has received many accolades in recognition of his strong leadership including being named Malaysia’s CEO of the Year in 2008, the highest level of recognition given to corporate leaders in Malaysia, organised by the New Straits Times and American Express. He was also honoured as a corporate leader with exemplary skills in growing, expanding and transforming the organisation towards a profitable, responsible and sustainable power company in the region when he received the title of “CEO of the Year” at the inaugural Asia Power and Electricity Awards 2010 held in Singapore. In the same year, Che Khalib was awarded Business Leadership Award, Energy Sector by the Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber of Commerce and The Leaders Magazine. Che Khalib was also named as one of the finalists for Platts 2011 Global CEO of the Year Award. Other finalists include John Woolard (BrightSource Energy), Aubrey McClendon (Chesapeake Energy Corp.), Wayne Leonard (Entergy Corp.), John Rowe (Exelon Energy) and David Crane (NRG Energy).
He was also honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Asian Utility Industry Awards 2012, held in Singapore. The Lifetime Achievement Award is regarded as the most prestigious award for the year. It commemorates a leader from the utility industry who has overcome significant milestones through his/her resilience, long-term dedication and commercial foresight that has helped shape the dynamics of the industry.
In recognition of his many outstanding contributions, Che Khalib was conferred and bestowed with numerous honours including Darjah Setia Negeri Sembilan, Kerajaan Negeri Sembilan (July 2004), Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang, Kerajaan Negeri Pahang (November 2004), Darjah Cemerlang Seri Melaka, Kerajaan Negeri Melaka (October 2006), Darjah Sri Sultan Ahmad Shah, Kerajaan Negeri Pahang (October 2006), and Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri, Kerajaan Negeri Pulau Pinang (July 2011).
Besides his corporate portfolio, Che Khalib has always been active in voluntary organisations. Dato’ Sri Che Khalib held many prominent positions which include Member of the Board of Studies, Universiti Utara Malaysia (Master of Arts in Nationhood Studies) and Univesity Malaya ( Accounting Faculty); and Deputy Chairman, Board of Governors, Albukhary International University.
Che Khalib is married to Suzlifah Hanim binti Mohd Atil and they are blessed with five children.
