C & E Publishing’s Allegiance to the Philippines: Provide Adaptive Educational Solutions and Fulfill Civic Responsibility
The Third Industrial Revolution paved the way for the digitisation and computerisation of traditional devices and technology. But rapid developments and innovations that exist unceasingly explain the nature of the next level of the industrial revolution – also known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Industry 4.0 or simply, IR 4.0.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution describes the exponential changes to the way humans live, work, and relate to one another due to the existing cyber-physical systems, the interconnection via the internet, and the connectivity between data systems. Smart technologies
connect and interact, visualise the entire production chain, and make decisions autonomously. During this phase, the interconnection between human work and rapid technological movement impacts all disciplines, industries, and economies in every country by creating
massive and rapid changes in data gathering in a nonlinear way at unprecedented speed. The wave of Industry 4.0 is so powerful that it provokes inevitable changes across all sectors of society, even within the landscape of education.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution is a challenging phase for the education sector, for it bears a generation of digital natives who are born in the age of the internet and digital technology. They bore witness to human work and technology as working in collaboration. While we can derive a good number of advantages in this collaboration, such as being highly leveraged in the presence of electronic and digital resources; however, the interconnection of human work and technology also poses challenges in the education system because the traditional approach to teaching and learning is no longer fit. From these challenges emerge the need for innovation or revolution in the field of education, thus the name Education 4.0.
According to the Times Higher Education, Education 4.0 challenges the traditional concept of schooling, classroom instruction, and learning due to the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, big data, and the Internet of Things that will combine and produce a massive impact on jobs and industry. As more opportunities are created by advanced technology, the education sector should adapt to help take full advantage of the opportunity created by the massive development. Educational institutions globally are expected to provide the best possible Education 4.0 experience to its students, not only to prepare students with the demands of Industry 4.0 but also to become the platform where the workforce of the new world is produced.
The World Economic Forum considers the following qualifications to be of high demand in the future workforce by the year 2022: Analytical thinking and innovation; Active learning and learning strategies; Creativity, originality and initiative; Technology design
and programming; Critical thinking and analysis; Complex problem-solving, Leadership and social influence; Emotional intelligence; Reasoning, problem-solving and ideation; and Systems analysis and evaluation. In the succeeding years, industries will need to align their skills set and workforce strategy to these qualifications to withstand the demands of future employment in the existence of IR 4.0. In response to the exigent times brought by the current Industrial Revolution, the Philippines had taken an absolute turn in its education system when K to 12 was introduced to the country. Despite criticisms on the country’s preparedness over this change, the K to 12 system hopes highly on providing Filipino students with skills and competencies that will prepare them for future jobs.
