Chin Soo Mau is a visionary with a heart for his people. Passionate and dedicated to his work, he is also one who believes in giving back to community and its people.
Born in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Chin and his three siblings grew up without the simple luxuries that many take for granted. The second of the four children, he was inspired by his mother, who singlehandedly raised them and ensured they were well-educated and independent.
Chin received his early primary education at Sekolah Rendah Jit Sin, Bukit Mertajam, Penang. He continued his secondary education at Sekolah Menengah Jit Sin, Bukit Mertajam, Penang where he completed his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia in 1991. In 1994, he pursued and completed his Certificate in Technology (Electronic Engineering) at the previously known Tunku Abdul Rahman College. A year later, Chin graduated with a BTEC Higher National Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Kolej Bandar Utama. Unable to pursue a degree overseas due to financial constraints, he accepted a job offer as an Assistant Engineer in a leading solutions provider in office automation and telecom related industry. After eight (8) months, he decided to move on and secured a role as a Sales Engineer in Mun Hean (M) Sdn Bhd for three (3) years. Working in sales turned out to be enjoyable for him as he gained precious knowledge and experience in conducting product training.
In 1999, during the worst economic recession, Chin decided to move away from being an employee to being a leader, proving he had the courage of his convictions. His passion and drive in electrical and electronic engineering made him venture out with a few partners to start his own business.
In August 1999, he started Pekat Teknologi Sdn Bhd, a holding company of Pekat Group of Companies. It was a trading company selling surge protection devices back then. Within a year it morphed from being a trading company into a Total Lightning Solution, thanks to Chin’s vision and hard work. Pekat provides Total Lightning Solution to Telecommunication Industry and Oil and Gas Industry.
Currently Pekat has expanded to the south of Peninsular Malaysia and aspires to become one of the top Total Lightning Solution Provider within South East Asia.
In 2010, Pekat was awarded the BrandLaureate SMEs Chapter-Best Brand Corporate Branding Category Industrial Protection Solution.
Despite his busy schedule in running the business, Chin still finds time to contribute to national and regional associations and he cherishes his time with his family.
Chin also led the company in CSR projects by contributing to the common good of the community at large through the transfer of expertise/knowledge to the local niche industry via sponsorship of 4kWp Solar Photovoltaic systems to schools with the view to inculcate Renewable Energy usage, raise awareness in environmental-friendly renewable energy and assist in generating income from the Government’s Feedin Tariff programme.
The Pekat CSR initiatives include:
- SJK (C) Damansara, Petaling Jaya
- SJK (C) Chung Hua, Klang
- SJK (C) Chung Hwa, Jerteh
- SJK (C) Choong Wen, Old Klang Road
- SMJK Jit Sin, Butterworth
- SJK (C) Yoke Nam, Overseas Union Garden
- Persatuan Rumah Kanak-kanak Subang Jaya
- Tele-Centre, Bario Miri, Sarawak
- Solar Powered Led Street Lighting, Rumah Miekle Ding, Bintulu, Sarawak
To this day, Chin has kept close contact with his alma mater and has been elected as the Vice President of Jit Sin Alumni Association (Central) Malaysia for the term (2016-2018).
Having been in the electrical industry for more than 22 years, he also has more than 10 years of experience in the solar photovoltaic industry, both in the residential, commercial and industrial segment.
Chin’s passion for the photovoltaic industry is further reflected in his contribution to the Malaysian Photovoltaic Industry Association (MPiA). He has been an active member of MPiA since 2010. He was the Vice-President for period 2013-2016 and was elected the 3rd President for the year 2017-2018. His vast experience in solar PV business has prompted the Malaysian Government to tap his experience in policy related planning and to engage him as a Member of the Working Group on Malaysia Solar Roadmap (MSR) 2016-2030. Chin also works closely with government bodies such as Kementerian Tenaga, Teknologi Hijau dan Air (KeTTHA) and Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) to set the framework for solar energy in terms of policy development, continuous improvement in policy agenda, and trend-setting to accommodate the fast-changing environment in the industry and at the same time promote solar industry in the global market.
Over the years, he has been responsible for the hands-on operations, management and strategic planning of Pekat Teknologi Sdn Bhd and has laid the foundation of the Group with clear authority and dedication to policies and processes. Despite his busy schedule in running the business, Chin still finds time to contribute to national and regional associations and he cherishes his time with his family.
As the Group Managing Director of Pekat Group of Companies, Chin never neglects the importance of people to the organisation. The loyalty of his staff, some serving since the company was established, bears testament to his excellent care and well received management style of always keeping his business and his people close to his heart.
