Tony Tan Caktiong is the Chairman of Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC), the undisputed leader in the Philippine’s fast food industry. He started the business with two ice cream parlors in 1975, and created Jollibee in 1978. Jollibee instantly became a household name in the Philippines due to its delicious products and quality services it provides its customers.

Tony has since then built Jollibee Foods Corporation into a multi-branded restaurant company with dominant market share leadership in the Philippines and rapidly growing businesses in 12 foreign countries in Asia, North America and the Middle East, and is continuously expanding its presence globally.

JFC has nine brands — Jollibee, Greenwich, Chowking, Red Ribbon, Mang Inasal, Burger King Philippines, and based in China, Yonghe King, Hong Zhuang Yuan, and San Pin Wang — with a total store network of 3,023 stores worldwide as of September 30, 2015. JFC also has a 50% interest in joint ventures for Highlands Coffee, Pho 24 and 12 Sabu.

JFC recently made significant investments for the expansion and operation of Dunkin’ Donuts in selected territories in China for the next 20 years. The company also made its biggest investment to date when it acquired 40% of Smashburger, a fast casual burger restaurant chain in the U.S.

Under Tony’s leadership, JFC has grown consistently and profitably for the past 37 years and is now Asia’s largest food service company in terms of market capitalization. JFC is one of the most highly valued publicly listed restaurant companies in the world. Since 1978, JFC’s system wide sales and net income have a compounded annual growth rate of 30% and 44%, respectively. It has a System Wide Sales of P117.9 billion and a Net Income of P5.4 billion in 2014.

JFC is the first food service company to be listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) in 1993. This helped broaden the company’s capitalization and laid the groundwork for sustained expansion locally and beyond the Philippines. From an initial offering of 9-peso per share in 1993, JFC’s stock price has now reached the 200-peso level.

JFC also operates commissaries or manufacturing plants to support the continued growth of its retail chain. It has 12 commissaries and a distribution center in the Philippines. Abroad, it has three commissaries in China, three in the United States and one in Vietnam.

JFC has received numerous awards from prestigious award-giving bodies. The company was voted Most Admired Corporation in the Philippines from 1998-2004, 2006, 2009-2010, and No. 1 in innovation from 1997-2010 and corporate reputation in 2009 by The Asian Wall Street Journal. It was recognized by Forbes Asia as one of the “Best under a Billion” companies in Asia and as one of Asia’s Leading Companies in the Philippines from 1994 to 2004 by the Far Eastern Economic Review); Finance Asia also named JFC as one of the Best Managed companies in the region from 2010- 2013; while the Employer Branding Institute and World HRD Congress bestowed to JFC the recognition of being one of Asia’s Best Employer Brand in 2011 & 2013. JFC was also included in Forbes Asia’s Fabulous 50 Companies in 2015, an annual listing of the most outstanding companies in the Asia-Pacific region.

As JFC received many recognitions and awards for more than three decades of operations, Tony was also recognized by many award-giving bodies on his role as Founder and Chairman of the company. Tony is an Agora Awardee for Outstanding Marketing Achievement, a Triple A Alumni Awardee of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), a TOYM Awardee for Entrepreneurship, two-time Star of Asia Awardee of BusinessWeek International, and a Lifetime Achievement Awardee of the Hong Kong based Asian Chain Restaurant Operators and Suppliers Series. He was named Management Man of the Year by the Management Association of the Philippines in 2002. Tony also won the Master Entrepreneur award and Entrepreneur of the Year award by Ernst & Young, which led him to represent the Philippines in Monaco where he received the prestigious World Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2004.

Tony is also Chairman of the Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF) where under his leadership, JGF engages in projects that improve access to education for the youth, provide livelihood programs for small farmers, food aid assistance during calamities, and nurturing the environment with partnerships from local government units, non-government organizations, the academe, and community groups in various locations across the Philippines.

Aside from being the Chairman of JFC, Tony is also a Director of First Gen Corporation and the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Luke’s Medical Hospital, Asian Institute of Management, Philippine Business for Education and the Temasek Foundation of Singapore. Tony is also a member of the Chief Executives’ Organization Inc, USA and World Presidents’ Organization.

Tony holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Santo Tomas. Tony also attended various management programs such as the Top Management Program of the Asian Institute of Management and Harvard University’s Owner/President Management Program. He holds an honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities from Southwestern University and St. Paul University, and an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Business Management from Far Eastern University in the Philippines.

The fast food giant’s main man is known by many to be a very humble person, someone who always listens to the needs of the company’s employees, customers and stakeholders.
