Chiew joined AIMS in 1997 and was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of AIMS in 2009. A Humble, down to earth, approachable, friendly, understanding, fun-loving and a charming talker is one of the many qualities one notices in their first encounter with the CEO of AIMS and the Chairman of MyIX, Chiew Kok Hin.
Chiew is one of the perfect examples of a person who can prove that with determination and hard work, there’s nothing unachievable. He started off from a very humble background where he was single handedly brought up by his mother, as his father passed away when he was only a child. Chiew is the youngest of 4 siblings, he was very independent, capable and reliable as he was the pillar of the family.
A few beliefs he’s carried on till date is to respect every individual and that they are all equal and should be given an opportunity to excel, just as he was given. His first opportunity came in 1995 when he joined UOB as a junior officer and was promoted as an IT officer in 1996. Thinking whether he should change scope into the law and regulation space within UOB, his genuine and resourceful senior’s advice changed his decision and direction.
In 1997, he joined AIMS as a plain customer support executive, where his dynamic personality and willingness to work harder pulled him up the ladder. In 1998 he was promoted as a Sr. Support Engineer and later as Network Engineer by 1999. In 2000, Chiew was promoted as Sr. Network Engineer, where he was a part of the team, which was involved in the management buyout.
By 2001, Chiew was heading the Technology division and became a crucial part of the management team that was involved in turning around the company to what it is today. By 2003 he was the Vice President of Shared Services and later in 2005 VP of Engineering. With all these achievements his thirst to achieve further only kept growing when in 2006 he was promoted as COO and finally in 2009 he was named the CEO of AIMS Group.
Since then, he spearheads AIMS’ strategic development and has been instrumental in AIMS’ penetration into the enterprise market and expansion to Cyberjaya, Penang, Johor, Sabah, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Hong Kong with the aspiration to soon realize the SEA footprint. The most noticeable expanded data centre is Menara AIMS, the headquarter, expanded from 400sqft to current more than 60,000sqft and still expanding to it’s maximum capacity, which will be achieved by the end of the year.
Chiew strongly believes that all his hardships in life have taught him to be more appreciative and content with life and its offerings, and so is he today.
Chiew led AIMS to becoming Malaysia’s first carrier neutral data centre in April 2010, certified with the Information Security Management Systems ISO/IEC 27001: 2005 from British Standards Institutions (BSI). This milestone for AIMS reflected a high standard of handling information in a secured manner; as the quality of a data centre weighs heavily on the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information and application that they host. In April 2012, he further led AIMS to be certified with ISO 9001: 2008 Quality Management System and subsequently Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) certification in 2014, making AIMS the third data centre in Malaysia to receive global compliance recognition for payment security. Committing to excellence, he doesn’t stop just it is. He further led the team to achieve ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011 from BSI for the IT Service Management System. It’s a global standard recognizing successful delivery of services in an integrated process approach.
Chiew always says his achievements were nothing without the hardworking and passionate team at AIMS that helped and supported him at every level of his professional growth.
Besides businesses, Chiew has bigger vision to serve the nation. In helming AIMS, Chiew also endeavors to develop the local Data Centre industry in the country’s aspiration to be regarded as one of the key Data Centre hubs in the region.
He was one of the key participants for the National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) lab (for the Business Services sector), where he contributed key insights on the specific entry point projects (EPPs) i.e. EPP 3 – to position Malaysia as a world class data centre hub, as part of NKEA’s intense private sector-led effort to transform Malaysia into a high income nation status by 2020.
Chiew was also instrumental in the forming of Malaysia’s first Internet Exchange (MyIX) in the country in 2006, playing a key role alongside MCMC to drive for the setup and thriving of the national Internet Exchange, which was crucial for the advancement of Internet development in the country. MyIX‘s peering infrastructure has lowered local ISPs’ costs for routing local Internet traffic, improved performance and enhanced the broadband experience for Malaysian Internet customers. Chiew is currently serving his second term as Chairman of the association.
Chiew holds an MBA from Nottingham Trent University. It was a hard-earned honor from his part-time study while he was working as engineer in AIMS.
Chiew today is a happily married man and a proud father of two little girls aged 11 and 13. He loves his family and enjoys cooking and tries to do it as much as possible on weekends for his family and friends. Chiew will always go the extra miles for his loved ones to see that they are in a good place. Another thing about Chiew that most don’t know is that he is also a certified lifeguard and tries swimming as much as possible, apart from being a lady charmer as well.
Chiew strongly believes that all his hardships in life have taught him to be more appreciative and content with life and its offerings, and so is he today.
