The inception of the idea
Working as a senior consultant in Sydney, Australia allowed Sharma Lachu valuable insight to how countries in the ASEAN region could benefit greatly from data science. As a Malaysian, he saw potential for his country to benefit greatly from this field. With what he felt was a calling to develop the use of data science in Malaysia, Sharma packed up his life in Sydney and moved back to Kuala Lumpur. In 2009, he formed Arcane Solutions.
Arcane Solutions’ target was Malaysian companies, and their aim was for said companies to change the way they saw and used data science. This, in turn, would help them to understand and grow their employees. Arcane Solutions’ technique was easy and singular – they would use simple psychometric-driven tools to get their point across.
It wasn’t an easy start for Sharma as many companies deemed him “too young to do work like this”. He was even turned away because companies in Malaysia didn’t need him to tell them about “their people”. Because Sharma had experienced and seen firsthand the outcome of properly-applied data science, he wasn’t ready to give up. He knew – coming from an extremely matured market like Sydney that understood the importance of data science – that while Malaysia was in its infancy stage of data science, the time for it to mature was quickly approaching.
By 2012, Arcane Solutions had grown exponentially and this was when they decided to take charge of their business and industry. They restructured the company to build and own their technology solutions for the fields of talent acquisition, on-boarding, and performance. They also developed processes that would enable organizations to understand their employees, develop their skills, and increase productivity like never before. Arcane Solutions was also renamed Accendo.
With Accendo, Sharma’s ultimate goal is to widen the use of data science in Malaysia to elevate how people are managed and how work is done here in Malaysia.
Growing the potential
With Accendo, Sharma’s ultimate goal is to widen the use of data science in Malaysia to elevate how people are managed and how work is done here in Malaysia. He stresses that once we truly comprehend that people are the nucleus of work, data science solutions can be built to help complement and change the way businesses function and succeed. Sharma also believes that just like how electricity changed the world, data science will do the same. The sooner Malaysia embraces this and allows us to complement their businesses with data science, the sooner we’ll reap the benefits.
Today, Accendo is recognized as one of Malaysia’s top 100 fastest-growing companies. Clients include Astro, Maybank, KPMG, Nestlé, Bursa Malaysia and many others. Their unique selling proposition is the ability to deliver end-to-end solutions catering to every facet of the talent lifecycle. With that, Accendo became known to cater bespoke solutions for programs ranging from Graduate Hiring to Succession Planning to CxO level Assessment Centre’s. Every project staying true to their theory “It’s not rocket science. It’s not even about human resources. It’s about reinventing performance in the workplace for optimum efficacy and maximum success.”
Whilst delivering and growing people performance for their clients, Accendo itself embarked on a stringent hire search and soon became a talent powerhouse. Leveraging on both local and international talent, the team today is built of Chartered Organizational Psychologist that scope and add scientific rigor to solutions; In house programmers to make developing technology a customizable process; and a team of Consultants to engage with clients. Driving the work force forward is their two word slogan that they apply in and out of work; Amaze Everyone.
The work Accendo has produced has been recognized over the years in every space they work in. Picking up multiple awards such as Best Psychometric Testing Provider, Best RPO Partner, Best Applicant Tracking System, Best Innovation in Recruitment, Best Succession Planning Consultant and a World HRD Congress award in HR Tech. Sharma himself has been featured in multiple media’s such as magazines and radio.
