When one thinks of excellent private education, the name Management & Science University (MSU) and MSU college comes to mind. Its impact across Malaysia and other regions is the result of its President and Founder, Professor Tan Sri Dato Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid’s innovative leadership and commitment to education over the last thirty-six years.

Through Professor Shukri’s endless pursuit in nailing excellence in education, MSU has received many accolades from local and international agencies. Not only it was the first private institution to receive the Malaysia Qualification Accreditation (MQA), it was also recognised as the Best Entrepreneurial Private University by Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. On the international front, it received a Five Star rating by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), excelling in areas of Teaching, Employability, Facilities, Social Responsibility, and Inclusiveness.

It is to no surprise that Professor Shukri’s strong commitment has made him deem worthy of the The BrandLaureate BestBrands Awards 2016-2017: BestBrands in Education – Leadership & Human Capital Development, alongside with CHT Pursuit of Excellence (Education) Award 2011. With a string of recognitions and accomplishments under its belt, it is of little wonder that this university possesses the highest graduates’ employability rate (98.6%) among all Malaysian higher learning institutions today.


Passion for Holistic Academia

As an all-rounded educator, Professor Shukri has played significant roles in teaching, research, curricular development, quality compliance, leadership, social entrepreneurship, management and its strategic development. He has published numerous papers in local and international journals and articles, participated in workshops, and passed his knowledge to his PhD and Masters candidates, by supervising them in in Management, Entrepreneurship and Marketing research.

Due to his wealth of experience and expertise in education, entrepreneurship and management, The Malaysian government has appointed him to spearhead several committees related to the development of Malaysian education. Many of these consultative committees were geared towards uplifting the standards of the local and national education to be at par with global acceptance. Notable committees are National Implementation Task Force (NITF) and the Human Resource Cluster Working Group (CWG), which were established under the auspices of the Prime Minister’s department, as well as a past board member of the PTPTN National Higher Education Sponsorship Committee under the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia.

Under his stewardship, MSU fosters a sophisticated and socially responsible network among their students by constantly engaging with local and international communities, industries, and even schools. This engagement has successfully cultivated excellence among pupils, such as the joint project with Ministry of Education Malaysia in developing a leadership training programme among school principals and in-service teachers.

International Recognition

Professor Shukri’s standards for excellent education has soared even to international quarters. In 2010, MSU became the first non-Japanese university to receive accreditation from the Alliance of Business Education & Scholarship of Tomorrow (ABEST 21) of Japan. Since then, MSU has served as a board member for this Japanese based accreditation agency. His distinguished career and outstanding achievements has conferred him the Doctor Honoris Causia by Josai International University, Japan.

He took risks to make education borderless by bridging the gap between Malaysian students and other countries. By introducing accessibility and mobility in obtaining medical education in Eastern Europe, he has received accolades such as the Dr Tytus Chalubinski Medal from the Medical University Warsaw, Poland and a LifeTime Senator by Hof University Germany. He has also earned an Honorary Doctorate from the Korea Maritime University for establishing a strong bond between Korea and Malaysia.

Not only that, his active leadership in education and its development has awarded him with the rare and prestigious Distinguished Fellowship Award by the Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT), Ireland. He also possessed the Middle East & North Africa and Asia Best Business Leaders Award 2015 for his exceptional achievement and successful business transformation, and the Union of National Business Ratings (UNBR), Kazakhstan: “Pride of Education” Award 2016.

His vision towards the internationalization of the MSU perspective of education has led to MSU being associated with various international organizations. Among these are the Association of Commonwealth University, ACU (UK), Association of AsiaPacific Business School, AAPBS (NZ), Federation of the University of the Islamic World, FUIW (Morocco), Association for the Study of Medical Education, ASME (UK), Association for Medical Education in Europe, AMEE (UK), Counsel for the Advancement & Support of Education, CASE (USA), the Accreditation Services for International Colleges, ASIC (UK), the European Association for International Education, EAIE, University Industry Innovation Network UIIN, Association if International Educators NAFSA, the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Education, CHRIE, International Association of University Presidents IAUP, European Foundation for Management Development, EFMD and the Association of Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, AACSB.

Professor Shukri is also the founder and steer committee of ASEAN Scholars on International Education Network, ASCIEN a not-for-profit academic collaboration towards internationalizing ASEAN higher education. The alliance is led by MSU together with Indonesia’s Bogor Agricultural University, Thailand’s Thammasat University, Vietnam’s SEAMEO-RETRAC, and the Philippines’ University of Philippines Manila.


Education for All

As a philanthropist, Professor Shukri believes in providing equal access to education. MSU Foundation is established to promote international exposures through students’ mobility activities and engagement projects with the underprivileged in Malaysia and overseas. The Foundation has spent more than RM60 million on various scholarship schemes, with more than two million spent yearly on continuing education. Clearly, many have benefited through these initiatives.

He also pushed through with the establishment of one of MSU centres of excellence, the Leadership & Entrepreneurship Advancement Institute (LEAD). Serving as a platform to support budding young entrepreneurs through allocation of a revolving seed grant worth RM5 million, a holistic framework and integrated infrastructure nurtures the culture of entrepreneurship and leadership within MSU. He has also contributed to development of human capital by providing relevant exposure and entrepreneurship to his students, thus elevating MSU’s position and graduates to have a higher expectancy of employability. Under his constant strive for excellence, MSU will continue to reach greater heights in private education, paving future leaders from its gates.
